tulum jungle resilience project

Qualia Tulum is an independent, artist-run ceramic residency and off-grid eco-community in the Mayan jungle near Tulum, Mexico. Rooted in craftsmanship, ecological awareness, and slow creative practice, Qualia hosts one artist at a time to provide an immersive, uninterrupted environment for research, experimentation, and studio practice.

The Residency Experience

Designed for transdisiplinary artists seeking uninterrupted creative focus, Qualia offers a self-directed residency rather than a structured or rigid program. Residents establish their own working rhythm, developing new concepts in direct dialogue with the surrounding ecosystem, raw natural elements, and the transformative processes of clay and fire.

Studio Infrastructure & Highlights

  • Ceramic & Pottery Facilities: Access to a rustic manual pottery wheel, traditional wood-fired brick kiln, open-air work spaces, and local raw clay sourcing.

  • Accommodations: Private, simple jungle living space equipped with ceiling fans, basic kitchenette setups, and Starlink Wi-Fi for research and digital connectivity.

  • Living Laboratory: Permaculture-inspired environment built with upcycled materials, low-voltage power, and conscious water systems.

Essential Stay Considerations & Logistics

Qualia is an authentic off-grid jungle project, not a luxury resort or serviced hotel. Prospective residents should comfortably align with our day-to-day living conditions prior to applying:

  • Climate & Ventilation: Accommodations rely on ceiling fans and open-air natural ventilation. There is no standard air conditioning (A/C). Expect tropical humidity, jungle flora and fauna, and natural forest sounds.

  • Location & Groceries: Situated along the Coba highway near Macario Gómez (KM 19.2), we are roughly 20–25 minutes from central Tulum Town and 35–40 minutes from the beach. Residents prepare their own meals; basic provisions can be bought in nearby village mini-marts (abarrotes), while major grocery trips take place in town.

  • Laundry & Housekeeping: A weekly set of clean sheets and towels is provided. Additional personal laundry is managed on-site using simple hand-wash setups or dropped off at local wash-and-fold services (lavanderías) in nearby towns.
